When you bought your house, you may have thought of finishing your basement and converting it into a space of daily use, but may never got around to it. If you are still thinking of finishing that basement and are short on basement finishing ideas, you’ve reached just the right place.

The very first step you should take after brainstorming basement finishing ideas is to prepare a budget for finishing you basement. Having a budget is a basement finishing idea which will keep you on track when you start paying the bills and feel like leaving the project half-done. On an average, the project will be cheaper if you do it yourself. Materials should form around one-third of your cost. Kitchen and bathrooms in the basement will add to your cost and are not practical basement finishing ideas. Add these to your basement only if you think it is absolutely necessary.

Once you have a budget and some basement finishing ideas in mind, it is important to go over the plumbing, water proofing, electrical wiring and cabinet space planning. It is a good idea to decide at this point if you would want to do this yourself or call in a contractor for help. You could decide to handover the entire setup to your contractor or ask him to take care of essentials like wiring and water proofing working on the layout yourself. When hiring a contractor to finish the basement, it is a good idea to check prior references of work done on basements, quality of design and workmanship, and credit rating of the contractor or his company.

Even if you are hiring a contractor, you would need to sit and explain the layout and your basement finishing ideas to him so that he can help take care of heating, cooling and lighting needs. Depending on what you are planning to do with the space sit with the contractor and work out if the current arrangement of heating and cooling can take the load of the basement as well. Other important basement finishing ideas include installing a heater or a cooler.

Finally, do make sure the basement is easy to get out of in case of emergency especially if you plan to have your children playing there.

Wed, 29 Oct 2008 06:18:13 GMT

Dear Glenn: We have a huge planter wall in our backyard. The previous owner, who had installed it, did not protect the bricks from behind. So over the years, water has deteriorated the wall.
