Basement waterproofing is one of the most important steps to finishing and using a basement. If you wish to convert your unused basement into usable living space, the first thing you have to do is to look for water seepage and damp areas in the basement. There is just no point in finishing the basement that has water problems, as this will only lead to problems with mold, mustiness and seepage a year or two down the line.

One of the common problems is seepage of rainwater from the outside of the building. This may happen when the garden or a part of the lawn slopes inwards towards the house. In such a case, the garden needs to be sloped towards the outside of the house to ensure basement waterproofing.

Clogged downspouts and gutters may cause rainwater to pool around the corners of the house and cause seepage. To ensure basement water proofing it is essential to clean and unclog these on a regular basis.

Ground water may also be the cause of water seepage in the basement. If there is a ground water leak, you would need to install a pump pit and a pump to direct the water away from the basement to ensure basement waterproofing. While a drain tile can be laid either inside or outside the sump pit and the pump are usually laid inside. This is usually done when a house is being built but can also be done in old houses.

To make sure there is minimum condensation form pipes within the building water pipes must be insulated. Once moisture finds its way inside the house it may not evaporate and dry out the basement as there is no proper ventilation. For basement waterproofing ensure that the windows and sides of the house are unencumbered with shrubs and plant growth which may not allow air into the basement and hence trap moisture inside. Sunlight and free air movement will help basement waterproofing like nothing else will!

By CATHERINE MALLETTE In the fall and winter months, the garden gets quieter, its colors retreat and the landscape becomes sparer. It’s a perfect time to add an architectural element — something to give your space some structure and depth. This year, consider a garden angel, a presence sure to bring a delightful element of peacefulness to your suburban retreat. A celestial six: Staking a ...

Glenn Haege: Remove crumbling concrete from wall (Detroit News)

Wed, 29 Oct 2008 06:18:13 GMT

Dear Glenn: We have a huge planter wall in our backyard. The previous owner, who had installed it, did not protect the bricks from behind. So over the years, water has deteriorated the wall. We would like to paint all the walls in our backyard, but I know the small retaining wall is too brittle. Is there anything we can do without having to take out all of the dirt and put plastic behind it to ...
